About CHP The Calumet Heritage Partnership is a diverse, bi-state partnership of environmental, cultural and historical organizations and individuals, libraries, educational institutions, municipalities, and governmental agencies.  Each partner is committed to celebrating, preserving and protecting the unique heritage of the Calumet region.


To identify, preserve, protect and reclaim the natural, historical, cultural and recreational heritage of the Calumet region of Illinois and Indiana for the purposes of educating and inspiring the public, restoring regional pride, and revitalizing our communities and their interconnectedness.

EXCURSION DETAILS Get away on a guided daytrip exploring + enjoying the South Shore. Travel with us east aboard the SouthShore Line Railroad + west by luxury motor coach along the dunes and swales of the South Shore.

Arriving Michigan City mid-morning, you’ll have time to shop the Uptown Arts District, wander the Farmer’s Market, or take in the Holiday Parade. After our private luncheon, we’ll journey by coach to the Little Calumet River headwaters, then seek out bogs, beaches and iconic communities, enjoying simple pleasures, re|discovering Calumet places + stories + traditions from Michigan City to Ogden Dunes, East Chicago to Hammond + more. All aboard! South Shore!

Our guide for the day is The Public Historian, Cynthia Ogorek – author of Along the SouthShore & South Bend Rail Line and Along the Calumet. Pack up your summer shoes + sunscreen, this is an excursion in town, in woods, and by the shore.
