SUCCESSFUL LAUNCH OF CALUMET INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE ARCHIVES
The launch of the online Industrial Heritage Archives of Chicago's Calumet Region was marked by a reception and presentation at Pullman's Florence Hotel on November 7. Attendees were treated to an excellent overview of the site by Andrew Bullen, who lent his expertise and guidance to the project over the past year. The site may be found at www.pullman-museum.org/ihacct. Simply stunning images that speak to the work life and industrial processes of the region are on the site. A special feature of the site is the "metadata" that accompanies each image , representing as carefully as possible the circumstances under which an item was originally produced, how it entered the collection, and an outstanding caption that explains what is happening in the image.
LOOKING FOR A GOOD MAP?
You may be aware that Chicago is currently hosting a "Festival of Maps".. which involves major exhibits at the Field Museum and the Chicago History Museum, as well as other contributions from some thirty other regional institutions. (See www.festivalofmaps.org). As part of this festival, Openlands, Chicago Metropolis 2020, and the Center for Neighborhood Technology have sponsored the creation of an online exhibit entitled "Maps in the Public Square: An Atlas of the Next Chicago Region" (see www.mapsinthepublicsquare.org). The site includes several important online mapping tools, such as www.greenmapping.org and www.census.gov, as well as links to some maps and sites of Calumet regional interest, such as the Marquette Plan, the Field Museum's Journey to Calumet website, and the interactive Labor Trail. Mark Bouman of CHP served as the exhibit's curator.
