Calumet Outdoors July: Heritage to Action Along Chicago’s Little Calumet River
Riverdale is one of Chicago’s southernmost community areas, with the Little Calumet River winding through its southern reaches. Often negatively portrayed for the presence of waste treatment and disposal facilities, Riverdale is actually home to forest preserves and neighborhoods with proud environmental histories. On this walk, we’ll hear from 3 local voices. First, we will meet at Beaubien Woods and hear Fatimah Al-nurridin talk about her 3 years of involvement in the stewardship of south side preserves. Walk over to Altgeld Gardens Homes and meet Cheryl Johnson of People for Community Recovery on the early days of the environmental justice movement and PCR’s plans to lead the community into a renewable energy future. Then end our walk with Deloris Lucas in the Golden Gates neighborhood who will share how We Keep You Rollin and other initiatives of the homeowners association promote residents’ health through exercise, clean air, and easier access to nature.
This is a free event, all are welcome, no registration necessary.
When: July 20th, 10:00am-Noon
Where: Beaubien Woods Meet at the north end of the Beaubien Woods Forest Preserve we will park along the entrance road, S. Doty Ave, directly across from Carver Military Academy’s athletic field.
